65daysofstatic - supposedly taken from the name of a John Carpenter film with the same title, that they supposedly made the music for but the real reason is as of yet not forthcoming

the acacia strain - Acacia seyal is thought to be the shittah tree of the Bible, which supplied shittim-wood. This was used in the construction of the Ark of the Covenant. As a spiritual icon it is also one of the most powerful symbols in freemasonry, representing the eternal soul and purity of the soul.

...And you will know us by the trail of the dead - According to the band's website, the name "...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead" is taken from an ancient Mayan ritual chant.

Appleseed cast - presumably from the movie of the same name.

As i lay dying - faulkner novel of same name

atreyu - character from the Neverending Story

at the drive-in - The band is named after a lyric from the song "Talk Dirty To Me" by Poison.

Avenged Sevenfold - taken from the biblical story of Cain and Abel.

bad brains - Via McCray, Mind Power became obsessed with punk rock and changed their name to the "Bad Brains", after the Ramones song "Bad Brain", but with the word "bad" in the sense of "powerful".

Beastie Boys - often thought to be in reference to a kind of breakdance but really stands for "Boys Entering Anarchistic States Towards Internal Excellence" according to Jason

Belle & Sebastian - named after Belle et Sébastien, a children's book by French writer Cécile Aubry

Between the buried and me - counting crows lyric - "100,000 feet between the buried and me"

black ark - The Black Ark was the recording studio of legendary reggae and dub producer Lee "Scratch" Perry, located in the yard of his family's home in the Washington Gardens neighborhood of Kingston, Jamaica. Although the studio itself was somewhat rudimentary in its set-up and particularly basic with regard to some of the dated equipment employed by Perry, it was nonetheless the breeding-ground for some of Jamaica's (and arguably the world's) most innovative sounds and recording techniques in the later half of the 1970s.

black flag - The name 'Black Flag' denoted both the anarchist symbol, the insect spray of the same name, and was reminiscent of the British heavy metal group, Black Sabbath.

circle takes the square - probably because it was a phrase often uttered on the show Hollywood Squares which was a variant of tic-tac-toe

the dillinger escape plan - a refrence to John Dillinger

The Dismemberment Plan - comes from a stray phrase uttered by the insurance salesman in the popular comedy Groundhog Day

the doors - taken from the title "the doors of perception" written by aldous huxley

fugazi - The band name alludes to a Vietnam-era GI slang backronym for a particularly bad combat situation, which stands for "Fucked Up, Got Ambushed, Zipped In". In Our Band Could Be Your Life, the group reported that they chose the name because of its ambiguous and vaguely exotic qualities.

Hot Water Music - on the spot, book one of the band members was reading at the time or liked according to Taylor

Husker Du - The group's name is a modified version (see Heavy metal umlaut) of the phrase "Husker Du?", which means "Do You Remember?" in Danish and Norwegian. See Husker Du? (game). Husker du? was also a music program on Norwegian television in the 1970's and 1980's, consisting of old people singing songs from their youth. That's why so many Norwegians think it funny that a hardcore punk band has the same name

Jejune - (Meaning: childish, or dull)

Joshua Fit For Battle - whose name was a corruption of the song "Joshua Fit The Battle Of Jericho", a traditional American spiritual song.

Minor Threat - was derived from The Teen Idles' only release, an EP entitled 'Minor Disturbance'.

modest mouse - Brock came up with the name "Modest Mouse" when he read the Virginia Woolf story The Mark On the Wall in which the author described the working middle class as "modest, mouse-coloured people."

off minor - The name is taken from a Thelonius Monk song

Pink Floyd - different names taken from different records syd was looking through.

Poison the well - Originally named "An Acre Lost", poison the well is a term coined when the romans would poison the well of a town

Pretty girls make graves - taken from Jack Kerouac's The Dharma Bums

Radiohead - The band also changed their name to Radiohead at the behest of the label, the title of a song on Talking Heads' True Stories album.

Saetia - Their name originates from a misspelling of the Miles Davis "Saeta", off of his landmark album Sketches of Spain, which, in turn, was named after a religious tradition of flamenco music

Scary Kids Scaring Kids - named after the Cap'n Jazz song of the same name

Seven Storey Mountain - named after the autobiography of Thomas Merton, of the same name

sunny day real estate - originally Empty Set

UpUpDownDownLeftRightLeftRightBAStart - the contra code or capcom code as it is sometimes known

We Are Scientists! - named after the Cap'n Jazz song of the same name

weakerthans - They took their name from a line from the film adaptation of Marguerite Duras' The Lover: "Go ahead, I'm weaker than you can possibly imagine."Samson has also cited Ralph Chaplin's union hymn, "Solidarity Forever" -- which contains the line "what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one" -- as inspiration. Incidentially, Samson borrows this line in his song "Pamphleteer".

zao - The word "zao" is Greek word for "Alive".
